The Ryukyu green pigeon is one of the most beautiful birds found on Japan's southern islands. Endemic to this part of the world, it boasts surprisingly vivid green plumage—something you might expect more from a parrot than a pigeon—which provides incredible camouflage among the evergreen forests here. This beautiful butterfly known as the Ryukyu (Ceylon) blue glassy tiger (Ideopsis similis) is found from Amami Oshima south through the Ryukyu Islands. This footage was filmed during winter, when they gather together in sheltered areas of the forest. When temperatures fall below 15°C or so, they gather and can be seen resting on branches and vines. Their pale-blue wings and dark markings make them one of the most recognisable butterflies found on Amami.
